Happy Juneteenth!
Today, we celebrate a significant milestone in our country: the moment when the US finally did the right thing and recognized that black people were indeed human beings. At least on paper.
Although slaves were emancipated in 1863, Texas did not relay the message to its slaves. It wasn't until June 19, 1865, that the people in Texas were informed of the Emancipation Proclamation.
Today, we reflect on the horrors our ancestors endured and learn from them so that we can immediately squash any attempts to treat our people as if they were slaves—whether by exploiting our talents or hiding our history! Today, we are free, and we will fight to keep it that way.
